Cell Phone Expectations

At Focus Beyond, we prioritize in-person, hands-on learning experiences and recognize the importance of balancing technology use with meaningful engagement in learning and work environments. We aim to foster healthy technology habits that support academic success, professional development, and student mental health.

Expectations

  • Devices must be silent (no sound or vibration) and kept out of hands and ears during school and work unless used for approved instructional purposes.
  • Students are allowed to use personal electronic devices for instruction, express needs and ideas, and to navigate professional situations effectively during scheduled breaks and outside of school hours.
  • Students must follow all expectations set by Focus Beyond and worksite partners

See Visual Expectation Chart for greater details

Behavior Support System

Step 1/Tier 1

Students who violate the cellphone and personal electronic device expectations will be asked to use the phone to access instruction or put the device in a designated location for the remainder of the period.

Step 2/Tier 2

Students who refuse to comply with the request, will be informed that there will be a private conversation to review expectations.

Refusal and Expectation meetings will be documented via the student incident report by staff.

Step 3/Tier 3

If a pattern of violations occur, the phone or personal electronic device may be confiscated for the remainder of the day/or following day. A team meeting including the student, case manager, and family (when appropriate) will be held to determine a behavior contract/agreement to support the student meeting the expectations.

Accommodations regarding technology will be communicated and implemented per the IEP
